The swimwear giant has launched Speedo iQ, its first splash in wearable tech. The detachable sensor tracks metrics like strokes, speed, and breath patterns, but it forgoes the one feature competitors brag about: an in-goggle augmented reality display.

Speedo is taking its first dip in the wearable tech market with the launch of Speedo iQ, a swim-tracking module that clicks into the frame of the company’s best-selling Vanquisher 3.0 goggles and collects up to four hours of detailed performance data.

“For almost 100 years, we’ve made swimmers faster through innovating what they wear,” the company, established in 1928, said on its website. “Today, we’re making them faster through what they know. Welcome to the next era of Swim Intelligence.”

Speedo’s entry in the tech sector puts the world’s largest swimwear brand in direct competition with specialized fitness tech companies such as Form, whose smart goggles display real-time metrics on an augmented-reality screen while in the water.
